Tiled clones offset not expected

Asked by KevinM

Hi. I'm using Inkscape 0.46 on Ubuntu 7.10 x64. I'm trying to use Tiled clones. I'm expecting the clones to be put on top of the original item but they seem to be offset (away) from the original. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or this is a bug.
I select a circle with a line on it, group the two items and then go to Edit- Clones-Create Tiled clones. I set Rows to 1x12. Shift X (per row) is set to -100 and Shift Y (per column) is set to -100, everything else is 0. Scale is 0. Rotation is set to 30 degrees per row and column. When I select the grouped items and hit Create all the cIones are offset by the same amount from the original. I've tried selecting 'Use saved size and position of the tile' but this makes no difference.
Thanks in advance.

The right way to do this is to set Shift X and Y to 0 everywhere and check the "Exclude Tile" checkboxes below.

The other way is to set Shift X per column to -100 and everything else to 0. You have 1 row and 12 columns. When you go to the next column the object width is added. Width is the X coordinate. So what you actually need is Shift X per column = -100, and everything else 0.

BTW, you only need 5 or 11 clones in this case (I assume you want to create something like a clock), not 12.

Hi. I've tried the things that you've suggested in every combination and still get the offset. Yes, I am producing a clock face and I need only 11 clones (my mistake). I can't see anywhere else where the offset could be. Please advise. I can raise this as a bug if necessary and attach the file.
Thanks.

One other thing you need to check is where is the center of rotation of your object. Make sure it's in the center of the circle (it's the small cross that appears when you are in the rotation mode of the selector tool). If that doesn't help file a bug and attach the affected file.

Thanks Chris. I've raised Bug Report #213793 and cross-referenced it with this question.

Kevin:
The question IS answered, so you should mark it as answered, even if the problem is not solved.
The problem is a bug, and it's reported, it is in the realms of the bug tracker now.
This answers tracker is intended to help users with usage questions, not to resolve bugs (that's what the bug tracker is for).

Next time you find a bug, please use the bug tracker and provide information about it. That doesn't guarantee that developers will pick up your bug immediately and solve it though, but it's the right procedure and the only that will make it likely to happen.

Gez - to clarify.
It was suggested that I convert the bug to a question. I find your response is a little bit over the top and suggests I have not followed the correct procedure.
Problem answered, but not solved.

I can't find the original bug which was then converted to a question.
