Permission

Asked by Allen

I'm trying to install the "Better Better DXF" plugin for Inkscape, when I try extracting the .ZIP into /usr/share/inkscape/extensions
I'm told "do not have the right permissions to extract the files to the directory".

What do I need to do here to make this work?

Thanks in advance.

that folder is a systemwide root folder. You can write there with root rights, or use $HOME/.config/inkscape/extensions folder (user folder; ".config" is a hidden folder)

My Fault, I should have mentioned I am completely out at sea when dealing with anything beyond the point and click features of any OS.
Step by step please, how do I get ROOT rights?
Or, how do I "use" $HOME/.config/inkscape/extensions folder?

Thanks for your help

I must have touched the cursor pad while typing and sent an incomplete message.
Sorry!

Hi Allen,

you can find the directory where to unpack the zip files to listed in the Inkscape preferences:

Edit -> Preferences -> System : User extensions

Kind regards,
 Maren

(you will not need root permissions to write there)

Hi Maren,

This is an interesting approach, I'd like to know more as I am not finding what I need.

If I open Inkscape and go to "Edit" there is no "Preferences" in the list (I was surprised to not find a preferences there).

If I use File Manager, and got to /usr/share/inkscape/extensions and open Edit -> Preferences -> there is no "System".

I must be looking in the wrong directory.
Just a bit more direction and I should be able to do this.

Thank you very much for your help, Allen

Okay, in that case go to File -> Preferences.

I think you must be using an outdated version, probably on Ubuntu. They still provide 0.48.4 in their repos, while the current version is 0.91, and there has also been 0.48.5 in between.

If you'd like to use the more recent version, and are using Ubuntu or a Ubuntu-based distro, add the Inkscape ppa to your sources. For more info see
https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/+archive/ubuntu/stable

Yup, I just checked, it's 0.48.
I'll effort an updated version before going further.

I had to laugh, I went to Files-> for Preferences and it isn't there either.

I'm running Xubuntu with xfc desktop interface.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again

I think the name of the menu item is just different in 0.48. Something like 'settings' or maybe even 'properties'.

I used Synaptic Package Manager and updated Inkscape to 0.91.

Now back to my question:
How do I change permissions on the /usr/share/inkscape/extensions/ folder so I can copy files to that folder?

Thanks again.

Never mind, I found the correct command and I'm squared away.

Thanks again for the help.

It's not recommended to use that folder, for security reasons. Also, on an update, your changes may be gone.
Better use the other folder indicated in my above comments, Allen.
