how to make scalable icons with Inkscape?

Asked by Bill Rawlings

I'm trying to modify an SVG icon for use in an application but when I do it is no longer scalable with the window size. Is there a setting somewhere in Inkscape that will keep the icon scalable after modification and saved as an SVG format?

Hi Bill,

do you have a file of an icon where it works, and one where it doesn't? If you compare them, how do they differ in the, say, first 50 lines of the files?

This might depend upon the application (framework) itself and how it interprets SVG - but it's hard to tell with just the info you gave.

If your own comparison doesn't help, please upload the two example files to a file hosting service of your choice, and post the links here, so we can take a look.

There is definitely no setting that makes a 'Scalable Vector Graphic' scalable - it *is* by definition.
If your app is html based, then this could help: https://css-tricks.com/scale-svg/

Kind regards,
 Maren

Maren,

You sparked some better understanding and I found the solution. Inkscape defaults to saving the SVG in "Inkscape SVG" format which isn't scalable. By selecting 'Plain SVG" format, the scalable capability to carried over to the new file.

Thanks again for the guidance

Respectfully,
Bill
