can't find Simplification threshold 0.91

Asked by Rim Jawad

Hello!

I am very new to inkscape, and I'm trying to learn how to vectorize my hand lettering. After tracing bitmap I would like to simplify it to retrieve less nodes so its easier to work with but I would like to change the simplification threshold so it doesnt simplify it to much and round of my corners. I've tried looking at tutorials online but I only notices that for older versions you could do that under the Misc tab of preferences. The 0.91 doesn't seem to have that tab so then I found a youtube video that changed the threshold under the "path effect" but I dont have "simplify" under my path effect options. It jumps from "ruler" to "sketch"

I was wondering if I could find it some other place?

Thank you for your time

Kind regards
Rim

Hi Rim,

you can set a threshold directly while doing the vectorization, see this screenshot:

If you later want to change the amount of simplification the command Path -> Simplify applies, look at the Behavior tab to find that setting now in 0.91 (the inofficial manual is a little outdated...).

Hi

Thanks for your answer. I don't see any difference when adjusting the
thresholds in Trace Bitmap. After tracing
the number of nodes are about 4100-4400, and then doing simplify doesn't
affect the number of nodes in the result.

The Behavior tab popup/window doesn't show when pressing Path->Simplify, it
just applies the command directly.

Hi Rim,

in the tab in the Trace Bitmap dialog I made a screenshot of, there are 3 options that influence the quality / smoothness of the result. You may need to tweak more than one of them.

- Correct. This is a setting in the user preferences, section 'Behavior'. 'Path -> Simplify' is intended to work without any additional dialog, so experienced users can just use the keyboard shortcut for a smooth and fast workflow.

- The next Inkscape version will have an interactive simplify path effect, that will allow you to reduce the number of nodes on the fly. However, this needs some computational power.

Hope this helps,
 kind regards,
