Hi Anthony,

could you describe in a little more detail where you are stuck and what your goal is?

I am stuck at trying to understand what the coloring book has to do with woodworking :/ - and what you mean by 'coloring book format'.

Maybe you mean you want to convert it to outlines?...

Kind regards,
 Maren

I'm wanting to create a pattern to do some relief carving with. I'd prefer just the outlines as you suggested.

Hi Anthony,

so the process you'd like to do is called 'vectorizing' or 'tracing' a bitmap (=raster) image.

There are two options how to do this with Inkscape:

- manual tracing (means: draw along the lines in your drawing, using Bezier or Pencil tool) - tedious, but very accurate
- autotracing (select image, use Path -> Trace bitmap), then - quicker, but might still need manual work if result is not as you like it, takes time to learn

A tutorial for the autotracing feature can be found inside Inkscape: Help -> Tutorials -> Tracing
and there is another, more detailed one, in the manual:
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Trace.html

The quality of the result depends a lot on
a) the raster image you want to trace (easier with few different colors, simple shapes) and
b) the settings you choose (remove specks, smoothing, number of scans...).

In many cases, some manual cleanup is required to optimize the result.

Kind regards,
 Maren
