Selecting nodes on text or object - highlighting text object

Asked by Cynthia

I created a stylized text document in Inkscape by adjusting the nodes on individual letters. I need to go back and adjust the nodes on one of the letters some more, but the program will not allow me to select nodes on the text or object. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Cynthia,

so from what you write I assume that you have converted the text to path before you started to use the node tool to drag its individual nodes.

To confirm this, select the object and look into the status bar at the bottom. What does it say?

- Group: You can either ungroup (Ctrl+U) or double-click on a group to access the objects it is composed of. Then select one and look into the status bar again.
- Path: Wonderful. Switch to node tool (keyboard: n). Edit nodes.
- Text: Ah, your text is not editable with the node tool. Convert to path (Path -> Object to path) and ungroup first.
- Image: Mmh. Somehow you've turned your text into a raster image. This can not be edited again with Inkscape. Write a new text.
- Clone: you can't node-edit clones. Find the original (Shift+D for the selected clone), edit that.

Else if you can't even select the object:

Check if the layer is locked (open layers dialog: Ctrl+Shift+L), unlock if necessary.
Unlock all objects by goint to menu: Object -> Unlock all.

There may be other reasons, but these hints should help with the most common ones. Always look at the status line. It's very helpful in most situations.

Kind regards,
 Maren
