Missing objects

Asked by Emilio

I've been working in this file for some months now and I've been saving it every hour when I'm working on it. Yesterday I save it for the last time, after it I close Inkscape. Today when I turned on my computer, Windows started to update, after it I open the file but I notice there are more than 350 objects missing (I didn't touch most of them in the last month), the file is saved as .svg, after I saw this problem I close Inkscape without saving ant restart my computer, It stays the same. It´s there a way I can get them back? How? Help please

Hi Emilio,

to be able to help you, we will need the following info:

- your Inkscape version
- your operating system
- the file itself and a description of what exactly is missing (attachments are not supported, please use a file hosting service to upload your file and post a link here)

Kind regards,
 Maren

Hi Maren,

My Inkscape version is Inkscape0.91
My operating system is Windows 8
The file: http://www.filehosting.org/file/details/539011/NUEVO.svg

And I'm drawing/creating some characters for a game, so there are around 15 characters (most of them are made of 30 or more objects), also 15 animals, two heads, one mouth (I'm sorry if it sounds too weird, if you open the file you will understand), 2 card back designs, 2 half characters and around 10 color palettes with 58 objects each one; none of the missing objects have effects, just colors.

I know there is a lot more missing that what I said at the beggining, but I would really appreciate if you could help me with this.
thank you

Regards
Emilio

Hi Emilio,

I'm sorry, I've only got bad news.... :-(

It surprises me that Inkscape was able to open the file. It has not been saved completely.

In this image you can see the end of the file (and you can see clearly that it is broken - it should look similar to html, but all there is is lines that start in the middle of a word:
http://imgur.com/mBRzcTQl.png

We've already had similar cases, and what they all had in common was that the user closed Inkscape directly after hitting the save button.

My very own, personal theory is that if you close Inkscape while it is still saving the file, somehow the saving process can be interrupted - but I'm not sure. Might be remotely related to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/967416 - but I'm not an expert on that (but if this is the bug, then the good news is that it has already been fixed, and the fix will be available in the next Inkscape version.)

Please enable automatic backup saves to be safe from now on, until the new version is available.
Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Input / Output -> Autosave

Kind regards,
 Maren
