how do I make selections based on color alone?

I'm a new user of inkscape and I'm having difficulty with locking objects to the screen and extracting images based on color alone...it's been years since I've used any kind of graphics software and technology and terminology have long passed my by

Hi Trevor,

to lock an object, right-click on it and select 'object properties', then check the 'lock' checkbox.
Unlocking is currently only possible for all objects at once via 'Object' menu.

You can also put your objects on separate layers, which can easily be locked an unlocked using the layers dialog (Ctrl+Shift+L).

I don't understand what you mean by 'extracting images based on color alone'. Can you explain that a little more?
