centering drawing on selection

You can just group whatever you call "the entire drawing" and align the group on the object with the align and distribute tool

thnx Mc but I worded my question incorrecly. What I would like to do is put the selected object at the centre of the screen From Mike Niklaus May you live with tranquility .

It is not possible to align (actually move) objects to the current viewport (the visible portion of the canvas area in the document window) - you can however zoom to the current selection (shortcut: '3'), to the drawing content ('4') or to the page area (shortcut: '5') so that the selection, content or page is displayed centered in the current viewport.

thnx. it would be nice to retain the zoom level current before the re-alignment. any ideas? mike

Inkscape currently has no option to pan/scroll the current selection/drawing content/page into the center of the current viewport without changing the zoom level. A related feature request is tracked in
