Hallo, Weet iemand hoe ik een transparant canvas in kan stellen? Ik wil nl. calligrafische letters in PNG wegschrijven en ze later naast of over elkaar plaatsen, en dat kan niet als ze in vierkante vakjes met wit woreden weergegeven.

You can set the canvas background color in
File -> Document Properties -> Page (first tab) -> at the bottom right (Background color).

As the Inkscape canvas is transparent by default, it seems your document's background color has already been changed at some point.
Exported png images use the canvas background color.
