Can't type text in Inskscape - nothing shows up & no cursor

I have been trying to add text and I select the text tool (A). However when put cursor on page and try to type, no text shows up. I have watched tutorials, and it seems like I am following the instructions. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Elizabeth,

if there is really not even a blinking text cursor appearing after you click into your drawing with the text tool, then it might be that you are trying to add text to a locked layer.
Check for this (and other reasons) in the status bar at the bottom of the window. If you click, it will tell you why it does not work.

If there is a cursor, and it moves to the right when you type, but the text is invisible, check the fill color of your text. It is probably set to transparent (alpha slider in fill and stroke dialog) or the opacity is set to zero (opacity slider in fill and stroke dialog).

If these hints did not help, please upload your file somewhere (not here, attachments are not supported, use a file hoster instead).

Also tell us:

1. Which Inkscape version do you use?
2. Which file from our website did you use for installation?
3. Which is your operating system (and version)?
4. If it works with other fonts.
5. If you can create simple objects (e.g. rectangles) in your drawing.
