issue with the path/ differnce command

I followed several tutorials on how to use the path/ difference command to create a reverse style image however for some reason my object isn't following the command. I even tried restarting Inkscape and it still isn't working. Do you have any insight as to why this is happening?

Hi Linnae,

to find out what the reason may be, please look into the status bar at the bottom of the window.
It will tell you what the problem is.

Keep in mind that, as the menu item suggests, it will only work on paths, and on shapes, but not on groups, raster images, clones, ....

If you can't figure it out on your own even then, please upload an example file somewhere (not here, attachments are NOT supported) and tell us which two objects you are trying to use with Path: Difference.
