Inkscape is slow and often not responding

Asked by Kaj Lönnqvist

I am new to Inkscape, but a very happy user, as it reminds of old DRAW! (pre-Windows 3.1).

For layer 1, I made the layout of a common experimental board, and it ws OK. Response was fast enough for me in any case.

For layer 2, I made the component placement drawing, but then the program responded extremely slowly. Changing from the rectangle tool to the common arrow for example takes a minute or more, and frequently "Inkscape is not responding" will be shown for a short time (15 seconds or so).

My laptop is fairly new (just a Lenovo G50), so my question is if I shoud change some settings, save my work in a certain way or what?

Regards / Kaj

Hi Kaj,

would you have a file for us to check? We can't say anything about this without knowing what's in your file.

Please tell us:
- your Inkscape version
- your operating system (+ version)
- which Inkscape program file you downloaded from our website
- 32bit or 64bit?
- a link to where we can download your file (if possible, a minimal testcase; attachments aren't possible here, so please use a file hoster of your choice or https://framadrop.org/)

Thank you!

Kind regards,
 Maren

Hi Maren

First the link to a copy of my work:
https://framadrop.org/r/1mZG--Wwz4#rp2h+BOM4eAEWeWCWxr1npvxNs5eDNg/BZjC6/MUo8M=
I use Inkscape 0.91. 64 bit version with Windows 10 Home, version 1511
Under Help - Memory I see combined memory: in use 38.3 M, total 44.2 M if
it is of any use to you.

Here in Gävle on the east coast of Sweden (the same latitude as Anchorage
in Alaska) we see temperqtures just below freezing point, no snow but today
a bit overcast and weak winds.Good enough for the fireworks that will go
off at midnight.

Regards / Kaj

Mmmh. I guess it's the layer with all the clones (Layer 1) that causes the slowdown. They are clones of clones of clones of clones... See status bar.

Maybe you'd better use tiled clones instead? (or even just normal copies/duplicates, but that would take longer to create - the grid structure is easy with tiled clones).

Better don't try Edit -> Clones -> Unlink clones - it takes ages (well, 10 minutes maybe on a machine with 16GB memory and a solid, but older CPU). But after that, the file opens quicker and preview works quicker, too. I guess editing will be faster also.

You can draw a circle, select it, go to Edit -> Clones -> Tiled Clones and enter how many rows and columns you want, and how much distance is supposed to be between the clones.

The amount of memory used is much, much higher (> 1GB for me). I guess you reported the second 'Slack' value in the row?

Kind regards and a Happy New Year to Sweden,
 Maren
