Program crashes after failing to performing specific function.

Asked by Alexander

I am trying to edit a picture, I have deleted an element of the picture and I want to replace it with something else but I am finding that the program will not allow me to put it in the exact "picture depth position" where the previous element was. So I decided that maybe combining the elements would solve this problem and I would be able to put this new element in the correct position using the lower and raise section functions.

However when I try to combine the two separate elements the program shuts down. The program says "This application requested the Runtime to terminate it in an usual way."

Regards Alexander

Hi Alexander,

Did you make sure the other objects are not grouped or in a different layer? Or that the object you are trying to move through the z-order is in the group where you want it to be?

> when I try to combine the two separate elements the program shuts down.

Please tell us:
- your Inkscape version
- your operating system (+ version)
- which Inkscape program file you downloaded from our website
- 32bit or 64bit?
- a link to where we can download your file (if possible, a minimal testcase; attachments aren't possible here, so please use a file hoster of your choice or https://framadrop.org/)

Thank you!

Kind regards,
 Maren

Hi Maren

My Inkscape version: I looked at my Inkscape manual for this and it says "fourth edition". If I have got it wrong please direct to the correct place where I get the correct version of my Inkscape.
My operating system (+ version): Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
Which Inkscape program file you downloaded from our website: I am afraid I cannot remember the exact link I used as it was so long ago and so much has happened since then.
- 32bit or 64bit?: I have a 64bit operating system.
- a link to where we can download your file (if possible, a minimal testcase; attachments aren't possible here, so please use a file hoster of your choice or https://framadrop.org/): I have never used this type of sharing platform before plus the website was in foreign which was baffling, anyhow I just uploaded my file through the "Drop files here or click to open the file browser" portal....I don’t know how you going to get it which baffled me even more. If I have not done something just tell me.

Just experiencing something very odd but I don't know if it means anything. I opened my file to eventually notice that the changes I made were not there, I reopened the same file again to find the changes were there and I can do this constantly, changes present, changes not present etc. So now I have two of the same file open but which are completely different. So that I don’t make idiot out of myself I have taken a screenshot of the file which is open twice but are completely different at the same time, (see attached) as I don’t know if that will happen with you when you open my file. To avoid any confusion and to clarify the difference in the images, the differences are in the centre of each Inkscape window, the image on the left represents Ireland, Scotland and England as one, while the image on the right represents Ireland, Scotland, England and France as one.

Just to make note I wanted the image on the right to look like the image on the left in that screen shot. Notice that the plate on the right is over the lions foot and it should not be and it should be under the neck of the golden helmet but I can't seem to put it in the correct place using the raise and lower functions.

Regards Alexander

Hi Alexander,

okay, so I guess I assumed too much previous knowledge - sorry about that! I hope the following will make things clearer.

- You can find your Inkscape version number in the 'About' screen in the Help menu.

- The framasoft site is indeed a French website, managed by a French open source community (another group of volunteers), but the important instructions are available in English.
After you have uploaded your file there, you need to share the link the website will give you - else, you're right, we cannot access the file.

- As for your screenshots:
Attachments do not work here, you will also need to use a file hoster for those - but I think that isn't necessary, see explanation below.

- About the oddity you describe:
If you open a file with Inkscape, Inkscape will load it into your computers working memory (RAM). You make changes, you save them. Inkscape saves them to the hard disk. Inkscape will not load the file from your disk again, only write.

If you open the file a second time in parallel with Inkscape and make different changes, then that file will look different. If you save it, the file on the disk will be overwritten.

So the file on your disk will always be the last version you saved - regardless which of your two Inkscape windows did the saving.

Make sure you save the correct file, and just close the wrong file without saving to not loose your work.

This is the way how many programs on your computer work and not specific to Inkscape. A few programs might check if another program has changed the file you are working on while you are working on it, and display an error message, but far from all programs do this.

- The crash you described though will need to be investigated. Would you please give us a link to the file you uploaded and tell us your Inkscape version number?

Kind regards,
 Maren

Hi Maren, apologise for not replying sooner life's hell at the moment.

I think this is the version number. "Inkscape 0.48.2 r9819"

Here is the file: http://www.filedropper.com/dualmonarchy

When you put this URL in the web browser you'll come to a website that has lots of advertisement, I could not understand the link you gave me, sorry I am autistic. Scroll down and you'll see a rectangular grey box, with "URL" on the left and actual URL in a textbox with "http://www.filedropper.com/dualmonarchy" inside, and on the right you will see "Embed", which is code to put the image into forums. Click the "Download this file" button directly beneath and you have my file.

http://www.filedropper.com/picture2jpg - I tried to take a screenshot of that message coming up but for some reason it will not play ball, instead it decides to something as equally or maybe even more stranger but it has done before just very often, wired though. See link to download picture. I will try every of couple of hours and see if it changes as it has done before.

Apologises if I keep introducing new pieces of information.

Regards Alexander

Hi Alexander,

nice drawing you chose there! But HUGE. And slow editing, because of that size.

Two things that will probably solve your problems:

1.) The Crash:

Please update to Inkscape 0.91, the current version. Inkscape 0.48.2 has been released in September 2011, and there have been 4 new Inkscape versions since, with countless bug fixes. 0.91 also brings improvements to rendering speed.

Still, there are also new bugs that come with a new version, be sure to read the 'known issues' section of the release notes:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Release_notes/0.91#Known_issues

2.) The problem with not being able to move the new shield down below the collar of the helmet:

Select the main item on the page, UNGROUP it twice (either by using the button for this in the button bar below the menu, or by using the right-click menu, or by hitting "Ctrl+U"). Now select your new shield and lower it in the stacking order.

3.) Usage of Path -> Combine:
'Combine' will probably not do what you want. It will mash all selected objects into one new object, with a single fill color.
Groups preserve everything about the grouped objects.

Kind regards,
 Maren

Hi Maren,

I apologise for not replying after Christmas/new year, at the time I had just gone back to university and I did not have time to do anything else. I will try out your recommendations that you have suggested.

That image I am trying to editing was the coat of arms of England and France combined in what would have represented the "dual monarchy", which Henry V conquered. Notice the fleurs-de-lys, sadly he died 51 days to early from dysentery through battle. Probably one of the most world changing events that ever came to be through chance.

I will send another message if I need any help.

Regards Alexander
