Freezes Up

Asked by Big Ted

I am just learning Inkscape. MANY TIMES when I am about to save my work the screen freezes up after stating in an error message that "it has to close". The window itself freezes and cannot even be closed out without using Cont/Alt/Del or re-booting. Of course, I lose what I had worked on and have to start over each time. What causes this? Maybe I'm not saving it correctly. I use it primarily to create eps files.

I use Windows XP and connect thru AOL on dial-up. I use Ghost to open and view eps files.

How can make changes or additions via Inkscape to an eps file sent to me? How is it best saved to do this again in the future? I also work with MS Publisher. Can I import images from that to Inkscape to save as an eps file?

1. If you want to make modifications to your file later, save as Inkscape SVG or plain SVG. However, some advanced editing options may be lost in plain SVG.
2. Are the crashes you are experiencing random or triggered by some specific action? Is the emergency save working? If it is, you should be able to recover your document, just open the file the message says about. Other than that, if you can't isolate a sequence of events that triggers the crash, we can't help you. There's also the possibility that the problem is your system, not Inkscape.
3. Inkscape currently can't open EPS files directly. You need to convert them to SVG using UniConvertor. You can get it here:
http://sk1project.org/modules.php?name=Products&product=uniconvertor
4. Your internet connection has nothing to do with your programs, unless they connect to the Internet (Inkscape does not).
5. You can import files from Publisher by saving them to EMF, and then importing into Inkscape. I guess there is such a option somewhere in Publisher. I'm working to enable copying and pasting between Windows apps like Word and Publisher and Inkscape, and I hope my work will make it into the next release.

Can you help with this problem?
