Split letter path color

Hello all, not sure if this is possible, and I am all very new to this. I am trying to make a simple text logo. But, I would like to change color of one part of one letter (eg: letter "i" I want to fill only the dot at the top with different color). I changes object to path, its allowing me to change individual parts of each letter, but I cannot figure out how to color part of a letter. Any help appreciated. Thanks!
