Asked by Max

I am attempting to create a vector file from a word doc with three items of clip art plus text. How can I manage to trace this doc so I can create the vector file?

Hi Max,

this depends a lot on the format of the clipart you have in your .doc file.

If it is already in vector format, export to pdf from MS Office (or whatever office software you are using), then import into Inkscape, and you'll already be done.

If the cliparts you have in your .doc file are raster images, then I'd still suggest exporting to pdf from your office suite, then importing the pdf into Inkscape.

After that, you'll have to familiarize yourself with the tracing functionality:

To find a general introduction into Inkscape, please take a look at the tutorials that come with it (in Help -> Tutorials).
There's also one about vectorization of bitmap images (Trace).

Then there's also info about this in our manual: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Trace.html

If you want to do the drawing part yourself, take a look at the other tutorials, too, visit https://inkscape.org/en/learn/ and its submenues, and if you get stuck, pose a question to us in the chat or in one of the forums dedicated to Inkscape. See https://inkscape.org/en/community/ .

Kind regards,
 Maren
