PATH for ghostscript

Asked by Becky

I am running inkscape .91 on a Mac with OS X 10.10.5. I need to open an eps file. I have install ghostscript-9.16 but the manual is extremely vague as to how to place "the utility ps2pdf in your “PATH”". Please advise HOW to put ps2pdf in the inkscape PATH.

Would you mind sharing details about how you installed ghostscript-9.16?

Inkscape.app does add a few well-known default locations to $PATH (a list of directories it knows to search for executables):

/usr/texbin
/opt/local/bin
/sw/bin/
/usr/local/bin

are prepended to the default $PATH as known by the desktop/launch services environment. Any binary/executable named 'ps2pdf' in one of these directories will be found and used by Inkscape.app out-of-the-box.

I installed a pkg file from http://pages.uoregon.edu/koch/Ghostscript-9.16.pkg, http://pages.uoregon.edu/koch/
It installed without a glitch. It worked as an external editor in Scribus.

According to the 'About the 9.16 Distribution' PDF from that site «Ghostscript binaries are installed in /usr/local/bin». Inkscape.app in theory should be able to use ps2pdf from this installation out-of-the-box.

Could you please relaunch Inkscape, and check whether these file formats are listed among the available ones in the dropdown menu of the 'File > Open' dialog :
- Postscript (*.ps)
- Encapsulated Postscript (*.eps)
