Text stuck on right to left

Asked by Nick Trutman

I'm a novice and just started using Inkscape. I must have accidentally switched something to where the text types from right-to-left and I can't figure out how to get it back to left-to-right.

Thank you for your help!

Nick

Are the individual characters flipped (horizontally mirrored), or did just the writing direction changed?
Does it happen with new text created in a new (default) document too or is it limited to text in the document you are currently editing?

Just the writing direction changed and it happens in a new document.

The cursor stays to the left of the characters. The characters are not mirrored.

Thanks again for your help!

I tried to reproduce this (with Inkscape 0.91) - without success so far.

Would you be willing to share a test case (new Inkscape SVG file with a text object created this way), and the current Inskcape preferences file for further investigation?

I can provide more information about the location of the preferences file if you share which OS/platform you use.

Since Launchpad's answer section does not support attachments, you could upload both files to a service like 'DropBox' and share the links here, or - if you prefer anonymous services - use e.g. http://imgh.us/ for the SVG file, and a normal pastebin like e.g. http://pastie.org/ or http://pastebin.com/ for the preferences file (and again share the links here).

Absolutely, I am willing to share a test case. I'm not sure what this entails, but I'll try and google how to dropbox the info you need.

I am using OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 (14F27).

Thank you so much.

How to retrieve Inkscape's preferences file:

You can open the folder which contains Inkscape's preferences file with Finder's 'Go > Go to Folder' command (the folder is normally hidden in the Finder').

Open Finder's 'Go > Go to Folder' command, and paste this path into the dialog box:

~/.config/inkscape

Then press 'Go'. In the Folder which is then opened in Finder, you find the file with Inkscape's preferences:

preferences.xml

Okay, I've gotten to this point (finding preferences.xml).

I've just downloaded dropbox and below is the shareable link to the preferences.xml file you requested:

Thank you!

You changed the letter spacing to '-100.00' which causes the described symptom.

To change the letter spacing for the default text style used for new text, follow these steps:

1) deselect any current selection
2) switch to the text tool (keyboard shortcut 'T')
(do not click on the canvas yet, nor select any text object)
3) the letter spacing setting is on the text tool controls bar right above the canvas, the one with the icon 'AA':
change the numeric value to '0' (zero), and press return
4) now test the new default text style settings:
click once on the canvas, and type a few words

Thank you so much! I knew it had to be something I did somewhere.

You're the best!

Much thanks!
