pen and pencil lines snap to unintelligable figures

Asked by Carl

I am a new user of Inkscape. In doing the first "simple" exercise of The Book of Inkscape (Kirsanov) I have drawn the head and eyes, but, when I try to add other facial fearures with the pencil or pen, the lines/curves that I draw change/snap to unintelligable figures, or the curves change to right angle turns when I release the left mouse button. I have searched for, and changed, various settings without success.

Just a quick guess based on the described symptoms:
Check the value for numeric precision here:
  'Edit > Preferences > Input/Output > SVG Output > Numbers'
The defaults are:
 Numeric precision: 8
 Minimum exponent: -8
A very low numeric precision can cause similar symptoms as you described.

Thank you for your suggestion. I attempted to follow the path you listed, but, was unable to. It didn't exist. That suggested to me that I probably wasn't working with the latest version of Inscape. I uninstalled the program I had and loaded an updated version. After the new installation the problem was gone. Thanks again.
