I cannot get text to frame to work

Asked by Christine

When I trace an object it just will not put text into frame. When I create an object somehow the merged lines are still showing up and the text is trying to go into invisible spaces

Hi Christine,

this sounds to me as if the object that you want to use to flow the text into is somehow not ideal.

If you created the object from several other objects, and it's path kind of 'goes through the fill', instead of only around it, you can remedy this quickly by doing 'Path -> Union'.
This will remove any path parts that do not make up the outline of the object.

You can also try if it helps to change the 'fill rule' for the frame. Select it, and in the Fill&Stroke dialog (Shift+Ctrl+F) go to the first tab, and click on the heart-shaped icon at the top right to change the fill rule. Nonzero (the 'filled heart') is probably the one that will give you more the result you are after.

If none of these help, your frame probably just has real gaps. You will need to use the node tool (n) and move the nodes / delete some of them / drag on the path to close them. After this, try the first hint to remove internal path segments.

Please report back if any of these hints helped you.
If not, please upload the file somewhere (mail attachments will *not* work, but you could register for an account at inkscape.org and upload into your Inkspace) so we can take a closer look.

Kind regards,
 Maren
