cannot align text to a path

I followed the instructions on how to align text to a path and had no luck - any suggestions?

Hi Beth,

just a few tips to get you going (please give more details if your problem isn't solved by these):

- Select both Text and Path when you try this (hold Shift and click on both objects)

- Make sure the path is actually a path (Click on it, and look what it says in the status line at the bottom). If it is not a path, convert to one first (Path -> Object to Path). Also make sure the text is actually a text (status line, again. If it is in a group, ungroup it, until you can 'grab' the text.

- If the direction of the text is wrong, try to reverse the path's direction: Path -> Reverse before you do 'put on Path' in the text menu.

If none of this helps, please answer the following questions:

Which instructions did you follow? Can you give a link?
What was the problem you experienced? (Where did you click, what exactly happened?)
Which Inkscape version are you using?
What is your operating system?
And if you can, upload your file somewhere (mail attachments do not work here, unfortunately... :/ )
