Inkscape

Inkscape will not let me draw with the ellipses tool.

When I select the circles, ellipses, and arcs tool (the icon is the pink circle), I click and drag to draw, and a dotted line shows with 3 nodes on it, but nothing inside of the dotted line. I then click on the canvas to try to see what i drew and it's not there.
After it stopped working I've tried: pressing enter after drawing, holding down shift and ctrl while drawing, going to object-fill and stroke, etc. nothing is working.
Every tool except this one is working. Please help ASAP I need to finish this part of the assignment or I'll be behind.

I went through all the other questions and went through that already, but it didn't work.
