Made logo using shapes, path>tracebitmap> and I get pixelated picture of logo, why?

Asked by Daren

I made the logo using shapes and I am trying to get it into vector, although when I go to path>tracebitmap I get a very pixelated image of my lettering, how do I get a good vector? Do I need to retrace or something?

Hi Daren,

if your problem is that you are trying to convert an image of a text from bitmap to vector format, you can consider two ways:

- use the Trace Bitmap functionality, and play with the settings. There's a tutorial inside Inkscape about this at Help -> Tutorials -> Inkscape: Tracing, and another one online in the manual: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Trace.html to guide you.

Manual cleanup may be required, but I suggest you first try out several of the different options (like smoothing, despeckling etc.). When the result doesn't get any better any longer, then hit OK to do the conversion and edit the result manually with the node tool, drag on the paths to shape them, remove nodes you don't need etc.

- If you happen to have the font available on your computer (or for download), you can also just type the text yourself, using the correct font. Keep in mind that others who do not have the font on their computer installed cannot see it in the file if you give it to them / make it available on a web site, unless you convert the text to path first (Path -> Object to Path).

Kind regards,
 Maren
