primera lx810 printer

Asked by sally

I am using Inkscape to create labels of various sizes for my cosmetic products which will be printed on roll label stock using a Primera brand LX810 model printer. For the record, I used NiceLabel in the past but the graphics are too limited so I want to use Inkscape.

I have the printer's preference set to landscape. The first label I created in inkscape is 4" wide x 3" high with text reading from left to right. I set the Inkscape document properties as such (4" W x 3" H landscape). The roll label stock has a width of 3" and a height of 4". When I send the label to the printer, it rotates 90 degree clockwise and prints within the labels boundaries without any issues.

Now I am trying to create a band style label which is 1" high by 7" long. The roll label stock in the primera printer has the same orientation (for the record there is 0.125" between each label on the rolls). So, in this instance, the graphics on the label in Inkscape have the same orientatin as the label stock. I currently have both the printer's preference and Inkscapes document properties set to landscape. In all instances, the bottom left corner of the rectangular graphic area in Inkscape is at the O x,y coordinate. I can not get the graphics to print on the label. No matter what settings I choose, it rotates 90 degrees and prints up the roll of labels instead of on the 1" by 7" label media on the roll. If I choose a different page size, (I picked 7.2 x 8.5) it 'may' not rotate it, but it picks a random point on the label to start printing and the graphics run off the end of the label onto the printer's roller.

I am totally lost. I have tried everything logical to get this to print working with the stated settings. I have even tried saving the graphics, improting them into my NiceLabel program, which I can get to print at the right oreintation but the label resolution is grainy and the color changes.

Hi sally,

quick solution I would try if I had that problem (I don't know much about the underlying printing bugs, beside that there a few of them, and nothing about your label printer):

- install the Gimp. (from http://gimp.org - not from anywhere else!) It's a powerful free and open source raster graphics program that has a great printing dialog, with a lot of options and settings.

- export your label to png (File -> Export to PNG). Be sure to select the correct area to export (page, drawing, selected object?) and to choose a *high* resolution (I suggest 600dpi).

- open the png file with Gimp. Go to File -> Print, set all options that you need and print. It has a great print preview, too! If you need to change the orientation first, go to Image -> Transformation and turn the picture around before you print.

I can't promise this will not change the colors, too - but this could also be a setting in the printer dialog... (I have 'Vivid', 'Natural', 'None' to choose from for my printer), but I know that printing from the Gimp usually works very well and offers a lot of choices.

Good luck - and good sales ;)

Regards,
 Maren

Thank you so much for your rapid response, I'm definitely going to look into installing Gimp. In the interum, I did manage to get a clear image from Inkscape imported into my NiceLabel. I'm no techincal guru so this was shear desperation. When I chose the export bitmap command, I set the scale to inches, then I noticed I could stll adjust the bitmap width and height settings. So I cranked them way up and imported that image into NiceLabel. What do you know I have a carbon copy of my label in Nicelabel that I can print without any difficulty. My creativity has been liberated! Next project...a business brochure, cards, postcards.
