I drew a shape with the pencil tool but can't see handles on my nodes

I drew a shape with the pencil tool. Used the node selection tool but can't see handles on any of the nodes.

several guesses here :
-you have to select the nodes to see their handles
-the penultimate button in the tooolbar enables/disables viewing handles
-the handles are "in" the nodes (for instance if you only drew straight segments) and you can drag the handles out of the node holding shift

Thank you. So sorry to ask such a dumb question. For some reason my buttons were not toggling what they are and I couldn't figure out what I had pressed. I had the disable viewing handles button set to not show the handles! I usually work in illustrator and am just getting turned around by this program!!! Thanks for your help.
