Hi ao,

if the object can be converted to a path (rectangle, text, ellipse, spiral, star...):
Select the object, then do Path -> Object to Path.

If the object is a bitmap image:
Select the image, do Path -> Trace Bitmap (and be sure to read the tutorial about this feature: Help -> Tutorials -> Trace Bitmap).

Clones cannot be converted to path directly, you need to unlink them first: Edit -> Clone -> Unlink Clone
