Inkscape 0.91 will not run on Win 7 Pro 64bit

Asked by Julian Ragan

I have installed Inkscape at my work place, but it would not run. I have tried both 32 and 64 bit versions to no avail. There are no error messages. The process will show up in task manager for a second or two, and then disappear.
In command line interface I have managed to get some information:

(inkscape.exe:656): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot find icon "object-visible". Motive "hicolor" also not found...

after that I see a large number of identical lines:

(inkscape.exe:656): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_convert: assertion 'str != NULL' failed

The number next to inkscape exe is different each time I try to run the program, eg.

(inkscape.exe:6624): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_convert: assertion 'str != NULL' failed.

The machine I use is Dell Precision T3500 with Xeon CPU.

Is there a way to solve this problem?

Regards
Julian

Hi Julian,

this sounds (to me, non-expert) like your installation archives are broken.

Which files from our website did you download? The msi installers? From here: https://inkscape.org/en/download/ ?

(There's a similar bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1329990 which refers to the development branch, from a year ago... )

Kind regards,
 Maren

Hi Maren,

Yes, the msi installers were downloaded from the official site for both 64 and 32 bit versions.
On my home computer I have just used that msi file to re-install inkscape (got it on a pendrive), and it works, so the installation file is good, at least for the 64 bit version.

Julian

Hi Julian,

now that is weird...

Are there any permission restrictions, antivirus programs or whatever (I'm not a Windows user...) that could block access from the executable to other files that are used by Inkscape?... (this is more 'brainstorming' - but maybe you have got an idea that matches...)

The only other idea I can offer is to (maybe re-download the file, and then to) try again.
In case you would like to compare the checksums of your files (md5), just to be entirely sure (I understand that it worked on another computer):

e02860a448996e3eba7ac5aa3739c229 inkscape-0.91.msi
a3b406f92a38c5a3aec0e1a5140fa175 inkscape-0.91-x64.msi

Sometimes errors happen when copying things from one medium to another...
If it still doesn't work after a second try, I'd make this a bug report and hope for a dev to have some smart idea.

Kind regards,
 Maren

Hi Maren,

I have verified md5 checksum for x64 version and it was good, so the file should be fine.
I will discuss this matter further with my sys-admin, but as far as I know, I am have full admin rights on that machine, and there is no software, that would impede other software, but maybe he forgot about something.

Regards,
Julian

Okay, please report back when you did, so we can try to help find the reason. AFAIK, Inkscape runs on Win 7, so this is really strange, esp. with those error messages....

I have finally verified, that there is no software, that could, by design block Inkscape. I also have full administrative rights on that machine. So I would like to make this a bug report.

@suv: Do we need more info first, or should Julian add himself to this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1329990 or open a new one?

Julian, suv is a bug manager - and I'm not, that's why I asked the question above.

I would propose to link this question to bug #1329990 (Julian will get notified about any changes to bug status there, and likely also receive all comments via email notifications).

Launchpad's answer section supports linking questions to bug reports, see the link 'Related bugs -> Link existing bug' on the question's web page.

If that report is too vague (the original reported was not really verbose, and did not respond to further requests for information so far), this report could also be converted into a new bug report (if Julian prefers this, even if the underlying issue might turn out to be the same).

Launchpad's answer section supports converting questions into bug reports, see the link 'Create bug report' at the bottom of the question's web page, right above the text entry for adding a new comment.

Please note though that currently the Windows ports of Inkscape (be it 32bit or 64bit builds) are basically (or close to) unmaintained. Chances to get a quicker fix / solution or help by filing a new bug report are rather low. Personally I do not use Windows, and could not further triage the report beyond what data is already available.

Thank you Hachmann, suv. I have linked to the existing bug.

I will assist as much as I can, after all, what I need to do with Inkscape at work gets done at home. Though I can't always guarantee a prompt response.

Sorry, I should have checked the bug link Maren posted earlier - I thought she was referring to this one, and did not verify:
* Bug #1495386 “win7 64bit Inkscape 0.91 start : encountered an in...”
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1495386
(see Maren's comment there referring to this question).

I'll change the bug link accordingly.

Just to clarify - bug #1329990 is not what causes Inkscape to crash (it's a warning only).

I have same problem and get same warning messages when I running 0.92.1 (7zip archive) in Win 7 Ultimate (64bit).

The complete message I get:

I have solved the problem after I read this thread:
http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=18421

I have 28 fonts with non-English filename,
Inkscape running correctly after I remove them...

Can you help with this problem?
