eliminating effect of transparent bkg

Asked by Chris

I am using Inkscape and have imported a transparent png logo as part of a label. On my monitor I dont see any background affect around my logo but when I print it there is a slightly lighter shade of the background around my logo after saving it as a pdf. How do I get rid of this effect around logo? I need to create a pdf to send to professional printing service.

Hi Chris,

I would think your png is not fully transparent.

You can check this by using the dropper tool.
Activate 'pick' and 'assign' and hover over the - maybe - transparent area.
If it says something different from 'alpha 0' (for example, 'alpha 0.02') in the status bar, then it isn't entirely transparent.

If this is the case, you can either cut out the object with a clipping path (non-destructive, shape must cover everything but the object) or you use a bitmap editor (for example, the Gimp, http://gimp.org) to select the almost-transparent areas and make them fully transparent.

If the png *is* fully transparent, you might like to upload the file somewhere, so we can take a closer look.

Kind regards,
 Maren

Sorry, Chris, my answer was rubbish in two details (corrected version below):

You can check this by using the dropper tool.
Select nothing. Activate 'pick' and 'assign' and hover over the - maybe - transparent area.
If it says something different from the area outside the png in the status bar, then it isn't entirely transparent.

If this is the case, you can either cut out the object with a clipping path (non-destructive, shape must cover everything you want to keep) or you use a bitmap editor (for example, the Gimp, http://gimp.org) to select the almost-transparent areas and make them fully transparent.

Kind regards,
 Maren

Hi Maren

Thank you for answering.
After selecting the area in question with dropper tool I can tell you that it is in fact the same as out side the area. So technically it is transparent. The effect only occurs during printing of the pdf. It is not visible during editing.

Chris, could you upload the pdf, the png and the svg somewhere, so we can take a look?

(I can imagine that - if you're unlucky - this could also have to do with your printer driver... if it has any 'effects' (for example, I can choose between vivid and natural colors) applied when printing, does disabling them help?)

Regards,
 Maren
