no lines or fills show up, just the area box and arrows. even after a reinstall. cant even draw a rectangle

Asked by Pat

I am trying to learn this program, but i cant even get a rectangle to show up. It says it has a blue fill and a black stroke, but all I can get to show up is the editable outline, or the select area with the arrows. I deleted the program and did a reinstall, but the same result. Extremely frustrating. What went wrong? Its the first time i tried using it.

Hi Pat,

your rectangle is most probably just transparent.
This is indicated in the lower left corner of the window.

There is:
- O (opacity indicator). It must be 100% for the object to be fully opaque.

- A checkerboard pattern before the fill color, that indicates if the fill color is transparent. Click on it or use Ctrl+Alt+F to open the Fill and Stroke dialog.
Pull the slider with the A (alpha) to the far right in the Fill tab to make the fill visible. Same for the stroke in the second tab.

- If the stroke is still invisible, it may be set to 0 (or a very small value) width. In the third tab, you can change that value.

Kind regards,
 Maren

(but zero opacity *really* is full transparency. Maybe you mean this: there's a bug in Inkscape 0.91, that makes the field at the bottom left show zero until you actually change any object's opacity. It's always displayed correctly in the Fill&Stroke dialog, though)
