Hi Chris,

Option 1): you could draw two independent lines (which in Inkscape are called paths) and make their ends overlap.
Option 2): you could add an unconnected path segment inside one path, holding Shift when you start to draw the second part of the fork, and also, make their ends overlap.
Option 3): Or you could just *not use a path* directly, but draw the outline of the whole street (including the fork) with one line, following its sides, then remove the stroke on that closed shape, and then add a fill.

The SVG file format does currently not support paths that split up and fork. Inkscape aims to be conformant to the SVG standard (so everything you create can be viewed in webbrowsers, and other SVG viewers), so there's no option in Inkscape to do this directly with a single, entirely connected, path.

Hope this helps,
 kind regards,
 Maren
