Asked by The River

I have a pattern filled shape, chosen from the fill options. I want to make that shape a patterned gradient, but can't.

Hi The River,

that's true - a pattern is a pattern, and cannot be modified with an additional fill currently, AFAIK.

Depending on the pattern you chose, and the result you want, there may be workarounds for this, though - like using a negative of the pattern, duplicating the shape and filling the duplicate below with a gradient.

Or not using a pattern at all, but tiled clones instead (choose 'unset paint' for the original), and then filling those with a gradient (select them all, and drag with the gradient tool over them).

Or - again, depending on the pattern - you could use the patterned object (with white+transparent, not black+transparent) as a mask on a background with a gradient.

Maybe this can also be done via a filter effect (I'm not sure though) - but I don't know enough about those to be able to help there.

This is just a small collection of ideas - if you need more help, describe the desired result to us.

Kind regards,
 Maren

I was using one of the 1:1stripe patterns with a 6% opacity just so you can see the stripes. I would like a gradient as the go northeast from the southwest corner. I will try some of the other things you suggested.
