Unable to open downloaded ai files

Asked by Peter Bergman

I used to be able to open and edit (ungroup, etc.) downloaded ai files but it has stopped working. Now I can not even open up an ai file. Not even the ones I could open in the past. I have Yosemite installed and I am not certain if that was the case when I last edited dowloaded ai files.
Very grateful for any kind of help
Regards
Peter

Hi Peter,

to be able to help you, we will at least need information about:

- the Inkscape version you have installed
- what is different now to the time when it worked (did you maybe upgrade Inkscape or your system?)
- please upload an example file somewhere that does not work for you
- what exactly happens when you try to import (and what you select in the import dialog)

Kind regards,
 Maren

Hi Maren,

First of all thanks for your support.

The version is 0.48
The only difference might be but I am not certain, that I have a later OS X. Now I have 10.10.2 (Yosemite) installed.
I attach a file that used to work but no longer.
Regardless if i try to open or import this one I get an error saying that it can not be opened (I run it in swedish so I do not know the exact wording in english).

Best Regards

Peter

PS I will gone for the day so I will look into this again tomorrow.

Hi Peter,

attachments do not work in the launchpad answers section :(
You may need to find a file hoster...

Here is a forum thread that may help you:
http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=13610

I think that maybe, at some time you had installed UniConvertor on your old system, which is now missing.

I'm not sure about the 0.91 version for OS X... I *think* it does already include the libraries for UniConvertor, so it *could* be easier to just use the latest version (be sure to read the installation notes thoroughly and to also look into this answers section on launchpad, if Inkscape won't start):
https://inkscape.org/en/download/mac-os/

@~suv: Can you confirm that UniConvertor is already included? I found another file from you, which seems to mention the included dependencies (https://inkscape.org/de/gallery/item/3884/) - did I get that correctly?

Kind regards,
 Maren

Yes, the packages of Inkscape 0.48.5 an 0.91 for Mac OS X do include UniConvertor.

Peter, could you look into the log file mentioned in the thread at inkscapeforum.com, to see if UniConvertor is missing?
(It's ~/.config/inkscape/extension-errors.log)

Just a quick note:

PDF-based AI files do NOT require UniConvertor (they are imported as PDF files which is supported internally).

Older PostScript-based AI files can be opened in Inkscape via UniConvertor, but this requires that the file is opened from within Inkscape, and that the correct file format is explicitly selected in the file chooser dialog.

This has not changed in recent Inkscape releases. AFAICT we do not know so far what type of AI files this question is about (they both have the same suffix *.ai).

Thanks,
I will download and install 0.91 - (however last update I did (to 0.48) totally messed up the communication with my plotter software - here I go again :-) I'm not exactly a computer wiz but have managed to make it work twice in the past thanks to good-hearted people like you - thanks again.
Busy travelling and hope to find some time in the coming week to go about it.
Best Regards
Peter
