How Do I Edit A Seamless Pattern Pack

Asked by Jackie

I'm new to working with inkscape and editing vectors. I have several seamless pattern packs that I'd like to edit or even be able to use. But when I open them in inkscrape and export each one as a png they are not seamless. How do I edit these packs or make seamless as they're suppose to be? Most seamless patterns are usually square I normally make mine 1200x1200 but most generally the ones that come in the pattern packs are around 450x1800 just depends on how they put the pack together. I'm totally lost with this I have no clue what to do, to make these square or seamless.

Hi Jackie,

I'm afraid I don't fully understand what you are doing and what you are trying to achieve.

Could you
- upload just one of those patterns somewhere (so we can see their format)
- describe your workflow
- describe the result you get, the result you *want* to get, and where you want to use it

so we can work out together what the best route may be?

Regards,

Here is the link to one similiar to what I have

http://www.freepik.com/free-vector/arabic-patterns-pack_763614.htm#term=pattern%20pack&page=1&position=2

Each one is a seperate pattern that you can edit then export and use in photoshop. They are suppose to be seamless patterns. But when I seperate them they are not coming out seamless. I hope that made sense. Sorry I'm terrible at explaining things.

Hi again,

I see. There's an .ai file and an .eps file.
The .ai file uses the pattern *as a pattern fill* for a rectangle that does not fit the size of the pattern. I guess that is where you stumbled.

The .eps file contains the patterns as separate tiles, mostly, but not each one, and some are crippled.

So the easiest way to go is this:
- open the .ai file (just click on Okay when Inkscape asks you about how to import the file)
- select a rectangle with a pattern
- go to Object -> Pattern... -> Pattern to objects
- get a single tile
- export this
- done :)

I spoke to soon, I did find this to work great BUT Im having a problem getting the pattern seamless now. I done exactly as you said and played around with the setting some but nothing I do will make it come out seamless now.

Jacky, please upload your partial result somewhere - without a file we can't really help.
Where is it *not seamless*? After export when you try to use it in Photoshop? Before?

Which settings did you play with? The export settings?

Please give a detailed description of your workflow and upload the corresponding file.
