Please help me understand the instructions to put settings back to original on inkscape 2d

Asked by shelly

I am looking at the instructions given to someone else to reset settings--they understood them. I do not. I just want to reset to original. I have been changing everything and trying to learn. this holding previous settings is challenging me far more than need be.

I would also like to change the settings at the very end of a project to inches so I may save as a DXF file and use it to cut metal. The paper settings are unreasonable.

Please help me I have been trying for many many many hours to overcome setbacks.

Hi Shelly,

about your first question:
To reset all Inkscape settings to default (not the document properties of a specific document! I mean those settings you can change at Edit -> Preferences) :

1. Go to Edit -> Preferences
2. Choose 'System' in the left list
3. Make note of the path indicated at 'System info: User preferences'
4. Go to your system's file browser
5. Delete the file you made note of
6. Restart Inkscape. The file will be re-created with default settings.

About your second question:
To set the document size and unit:
1. Go to File -> Document properties
2. In the first tab, at the top right, select your default unit
3. Choose a size from the list below 'Page size' or set a custom size below that list.

For questions relating to cutting and plotting please refer to the respective cutter / plotter / maker forums. Two of them are linked here: https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/269264

Kind regards,
 Maren

The second question is answered and the problem is solved. THANK YOU!!! We are headed out to cut the metal!

I have to wonder if I am in another version of Inkscape because under edit there is no preference option. under file there is inkscape preferences which opens a window with Tools on the top left but no "system" not able to find system info

Thank you for help with the sizing.

You can check the version number in Menu -> Help -> About.

For versions older than 0.91, search for a file named 'preferences.xml' in your Inkscape folder and subfolders, possibly:

~/.inkscape/preferences.xml (0.46 and earlier)
~/.config/Inkscape/preferences.xml (0.47 and later)

where the tilde is an abbreviation for your home directory.

With Inkscape <= 0.48, the preferences dialog is indeed under
'File > Inkscape preferences'
and the information about the system paths is displayed less informative
under 'Misc' (the last item in the list on the left in the preferences
dialog) - the top-most entry in 'Misc > System info' is 'User config'

Can you help with this problem?
