Installation localizes to system default language

Asked by TuxSax on 2015-07-05

My system is in hebrew, but I don't want Inkscape menus to be displayed in hebrew, as it decided to do after installation.
I changed it in preferences to english, but it still showing all the menus from right to left.

Hi TuxSax,

Did you restart Inkscape? Usually, a restart of the program is needed for the language setting to take effect.

Or do you mean the English text is now displayed from right to left?
If so: What is your Inkscape version and your operating system? Which Inkscape file did you download to install?

Regards,
 Maren

I did restart the program, it changed the display language from hebrew to english, but all the menus were in english from right to left (File, Edit, etc)

Right now I solved it by uninstalling and re-installing using the "custom" installation and opting out for all translations, so this time it installed it totally in english.

It's a work around but the default "typical" installation shouldn't cause such troubles.

You're right. I couldn't find this reported already, so I made this a bug report.

Could you still add some info to it:
- a screenshot of the wrong menus
- info about your Inkscape version
- info about your operating system (version)
- which file you downloaded from our website

Please, add the info here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1471575

Thank you, TuxSax!

Kind regards,
 Maren

I just realized that the screenshot might be difficult now...
Just describe the menus in as much detail as you can, if you don't want to uninstall, reinstall, uninstall, reinstall Inkscape... ;)

Just for your information, I had a similar problem when installing GIMP a while ago.
I think it must have something to do with some Windows installer feature of this opensource GNU programs. They probably use the same framework, right?

Can you help with this problem?
