Hi Richard,

could you upload your file somewhere? For example, create an account at inkscape.org, and upload the svg and the resulting png there.

Regards,
 Maren

1) You seem to use Inkscape 0.48.5 (at least the drawing was last edited and saved with Inkscape 0.48.5). The performance of the older renderer in Inkscape 0.48 and earlier versions isn't very good, especially with large blurred objects; there are hard-coded limits which cause objects to be omitted from rendering if they would exceed a certain amount of required memory. The new renderer in Inkscape 0.91 (which was released back in January) has generally better performance and better results when exporting your drawing to bitmap (and no longer has these hard-coded limits when rasterizing objects).

2) The export size - as far as I can tell the PNG image you shared is the drawing area of the SVG image exported at 800dpi - seems unusually high (see pixel dimensions of your exported image - is this intended to go to print as raster image for a huge poster or billboard)? The huge export size is getting really costly performance-wise with strongly blurred objects (filter effects in general require a lot of computing power and memory, gaussian blurs even more so).

Possible options could be:
a) Export at a lower export resolution.
b) Create bitmap copies (menu 'Edit') of each blurred ellipse at a much lower resolution (e.g. 90 or 150dpi) and hide the vector object (the blurred ellipses) on a separate layer before exporting - this will affect the quality of those areas in the exported bitmap image though. The resolution for the bitmap copies can be set in the preferences - the default there is the same as the default for bitmap export: 90dpi.
c) Reconsider the design (if the size of the export needs indeed to be around 28000 x 14000 px).
Inkscape also ships with an extension which can simulate Gaussian blurs with vector objects - whether this would produce acceptable results in case a high export resolution is a strict requirement I don't know. [1]
d) Upgrade to Inkscape 0.91 [3] - a quick test exporting the page area at 300dpi worked ok and reasonably fast on a not-so-fast 2013 13-inch MBP. I haven't tested higher resolutions myself.

Note: In Inkscape 0.91, you will need to reimport some of the embedded and scaled bitmap images in your drawing first due to bug #1357808. The bug report has also an extension attached which can be used adjust the existing drawing (as is, without having to redo the imports) so that it renders as expected in Inkscape 0.91. [4]

Thank you for your response. I did adjust the resolution down several times and received the same result. The project is a 18"x30" door mat as a gift. With my upgraded MacBook I can render 12,000 dpi in under a minute. I had created a custom phone case at 10,000dpi and that's for an iPhone 6. I was unaware of the new update and will try that once I get back home. I'll will let you know the end results. Thank you again!

Can you help with this problem?
