how to move object in front of picture

i want to move object made with the pen tool infront of a picture (JPG)

Hi Garry,

probably all you need to do is hit F1, and then grab and move the object using the mouse.

If the object is then behind/below the picture, you can change the stacking order by hitting PgUp / PgDown for the selected object.

You might also want to take a look into the tutorials that come with Inkscape. You can find those in the Menu: Help -> Tutorials.
