Hi Denise,

so you will probably want to read the documentation/tutorials about vectorizing a raster image here:
- inside Inkscape: Help -> Tutorials -> Tracing
- http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Trace.html
(with 'Stack Scans' unchecked, probably, is what you need)

and then, when you have successfully turned your raster image into a vector object,

- ungroup the vector object (Shift + Ctrl + G)
- you may need to clean up the the result a little
- create a layer for every object (Shift + Ctrl + L to open layer dialog)
- Use Shift+PgUp/PgDown to move the objects to their respective layers

I can't tell you if this is then already what your vinyl cutter wants, or if it needs other modifications to the file.

Regards,
 Maren
