PUA glyphs in unicode mapped fonts showing as boxes not letters in glyph editor

Asked by JT

Hello, can someone tell me if there is a step or adjustment I need to make to correct this issue? I have several fonts mapped to unicode that employ the Private Use Area. When I try to access these characters, all I see are small boxes with what appears to be 4 varying letters or symbols in them (they are too small to read properly) - rather than that actual glyph. However, none of the letters or symbols correspond to the image I should be seeing for that code point. The only way to know which glyph I've selected is to double click any given box and click Append. I'm assuming this is not how this feature is intended to work and that the actual glyph associated with that code point should be visible in the Glyph Editor window?

After checking a few more fonts, this is not limited to unicode mapped fonts, but appears to be an issue with any font that offers alternate lettering/glyphs. I am selecting the correct font in both the text box and the corresponding Font Family in the Glyph Editor. If it makes a difference, I am running v.48 (although I saw this same issue in v.91) on Windows.

Thank you!
JT

The Glyphs dialog for now cannot use the selected font to display the actual preview image of the glyphs available in the selected font - it always uses the UI font, at a fixed size.

This limitation of the Glyphs dialog is mentioned e.g. here:
* Bug #343186 “Glyph (or character) selector”
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/343186/comments/14

Another related report (feature request) AFAIU is
* Bug #696253 “Adjustable size of glyphs in Glyphs dialog”

Ok. So seeing boxes, rather than characters, is an expected outcome at this point? And the appropriate glyph to use is determined by the HEX value, rather than a visual?
