I want to make an ellipse without it being filled in. Whenever I create a shape, the entire thing is filled in.

Asked by Sarah Reynes

I need to make shapes and ellipses, but only the outline of them. Meaning I want to create an outline of a shape that is blank on the inside. I don't know how to make my shapes hollow. They always become filled in.

Hi Sarah,

you can set the fill and the stroke of a shape in Inkscape using the Fill&Stroke dialog (Ctrl+Shift+F).

- Set the stroke to the color you want in the second tab,
- set the stroke width to the width you want in the third tab,
- and set the fill of the shape to No paint (the cross icon) in the first tab.

As it seems you are very new to Inkscape, you might want to take a guided tour first ;) , following our tutorials in the Help menu.

Regards,
 Maren
