Inkscape 0.91 Windows 64 bit saving files for Adobe Ilustrator, EPS and PDF

Asked by Daniel Murray

Hi All...

I am using Inkscape version 091 on Windows 8.1 64 bit; GhostScript gs9_16 (this is the 64 bit version) is duly installed and set in my Environment Variables.

After receiving a very helpfull response to question #265135, I have tried to access Inkscape's svg file in Adobe Ilustrator; I currently have a case where -for no apparent reeason- a small portion of text included in an svg file IS NOT appearing when the same svg file is opened/imported to Adobe Ilustrator.

I can provide the svg file for anyone's review.

I attempted to save-as EPS, but when opening the .EPS file in Adobe Ilustrator, the contents are "pixeled". The EPS options I have set are:
-Restrict to PS level: PostScript level 3
-Check on Convert texts to paths
-UnCheck EPS +LateX: Omit text in EPS, and create LaTeX file
-UnCheck Rasterize filter efects (by the way, I have no filters in place)
-Resolution for resterization (dpi): 90
-Output page size: Use exported objects size
-Bleed/margin (mm): 0.0
-Limit export to the object with ID: blank

I have also attempted to save-as PDF, but when opening the .PDF file in Adobe Reader, many of the characters in the original svg file, show up as "blanks" or are changed to windings/strange characters in the pdf version of the same file. The PDF options I have set are:
-Restrict to PDF version: PDF 1.5
-Check on Convert texts to paths
-UnCheck EPS +LateX: Omit text in EPS, and create LaTeX file
-UnCheck Rasterize filter efects (by the way, I have no filters in place)
-Resolution for resterization (dpi): 90
-Output page size: Use exported objects size
-Bleed/margin (mm): 0.0
-Limit export to the object with ID: blank

I'll be more than willing to provide the original svg file for anyone's review.

None of these inconviniences where ocurring when using version 0.48 32 Bit on the same machine.

Can anyone please advise what I could be doing wrong or if this is a bug that can be avoided by using an alternative method / could I be missing a component such as Ghostscript?

Many thanks for any assistance you may provide.
Kind regards.

Hi Daniel,

SVG:
Did you make sure that the small amount of text which can't be seen in AI is *not* flowed text?

Flowed text is not svg standard compatible, and needs to be converted before it can be used with other programs.

Please read on here for more info:

About the pdf / eps export:
There are really many bugs reported about eps export, and also a lot about pdf export. I'm not sure I would be able to find out if one of those already reflects your problem without having seen your files (and maybe also *with* having seen them), so I would like to ask you to look through them, if you find the time, to see if your problem is already known.

The rasterization on eps export could also be due to the fact that there are partial transparencies in your picture (if there are). As far as I understand, EPS (from PostScript 3) only supports partial transparency for raster images, so partially transparent vector objects have to be rasterized before export to EPS. You can make the dpi higher, or adapt all your non-opaque colors. See here for a discussion about this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/911690

I have no idea about the missing letters in the pdf, unfortunately. Anybody else?

Regards,
 Maren
