Asked by SR

http://goinkscape.com/how-to-draw-an-adorable-elephant-in-inkscape/

I have tried to do this "PC-recipe", baut at Step 3 : I put on the ear, but can't get color in it. What is the problem? I have tried and tried, but nothing help to get color in the ear. Do I need different layers? Do the end of the ear stand on the edge of the circle? ???

Do Ctrl+C on the body to copy the body (and its properties) and then select the ear, and do Ctrl+Shift+V to insert the properties of the body.

It's still not working. Do I need to do something special to get the properties copied over? Or is the letter V for paste properties?

Which OS/platform are you using?

V is for pasting the properties only, yes. You need to press all three keys at the same time (if you're on Windows or Linux) while you have selected the object you want to paste the properties to. Also make sure that opacity is set to 100% (bottom right, the tiny field which allows to enter a number).

If this doesn't work, please describe exactly what you do (click on this, press this key... ) in the order you do it, so we can see where you're stuck.

On Mac OS/X, you will need to follow the steps in our FAQ about the Ctrl key on Mac OS first.

More importantly, the prefs for the X11/XQuartz pasteboard need to be
adjusted as depicted on the download page - else pasting style won't
work at all.

And 'Ctrl' does work out-of-the-box on OS X - nothing to change here
(the problematic modifier key is 'alt/option' - which is not relevant to
the question discussed here AFAICT).

~suv, is this outdated then: https://inkscape.org/en/learn/faq/#Cmd_key_doesn%27t_work ? What should it be updated to?

?

'CMd' is a separate modifier key, aside from 'Ctrl' - the 'Ctrl'
modifier works as expected. Not sure what your question is about in the
context here (the keyboard shortcut in question (to paste the style from
the object on the clipboard) is 'Shift+Ctrl+V' - this works as is on OS X).

In order to be able to paste the style from the object on the clipboard
however requires on OS X to adjust the X11/XQuartz pasteboard
preferences as mentioned earlier (otherwise the clipboard returns a
bitmap image, which obviously doesn't provide any style properties
applicable to vector objects).

Since we don't know yet which OS the user asking the original question
is on - can we wait until we know, or take the discussion elsewhere?

Sorry I didn't write OS/platform. I use Windows 7. I mark the cirkle and use Ctrl+C to copy the cirkle. Then I mark the ear and use Ctrl+Shift+V at the same time and nothing happens. Then I try Ctrl+V to paste the properties to the ear. Now I see that the path have the same color-numbers on RGB, but I still don't see any color on the ear. Why can't I see the color on the ear when the properties are the same?
Thanks for using time to help me.

Ok, Siv, I have an idea what could be going on:

When you select the pencil tool for drawing the ear, look at the toolbar. There is a drop-down for selecting the shape of the line you draw. This drop-down needs to be set to 'None' (or Ingen ;) ).

If it is not set to none, you cannot fill the shape you create, because the line itself consists of the fill. Hard to explain, you will understand this later ;)

And I have to correct myself: It is the Shift part of the key combination which makes you paste only the properties, and not the whole object (which would be Ctrl+V only), sorry about that! I did not intend to add to your confusion...

 Maren

Sorry, but I still don't get it. When I use the pencil I can read in the upper right corner (see picture) :Fill : NoneStroke : 1To paste only properties I need to use the Edit Menu (see picture).
Do you know someone that can explain it in norwegian? Maybe it would help me to better understand it because now it is a mix of english and norwegian expressions. I'm not so good in technical english.

No, sorry, Siv, I don't know anyone who speaks Norwegian. I can answer in English, German, French and Spanish only, and the others here cover the same languages.

And this place here on launchpad does not support mail attachments, so I cannot see your pictures : (

Step-by-Step:

1. Please, click on the pencil tool.
2. Then look at the top of the window. There is a toolbar for the pencil tool. It has three texts. They say (in the Norwegian version):
    Mode Smoothing Shape
3. Click on the drop down selection behind 'Shape'. Select 'None' (it is not translated, unfortunately. Although 'Ingen' should be right).
4. Draw the ear with the pencil tool.
5. If it is already pink, be happy :)

6. If it is not yet pink, click on the pink circle (the elephant's body)(select the circle)
Then hit Ctrl + V (at the same time) (copy the circle).
Then click on the new ear (select the ear)
Then hit Ctrl + Shift + V (paste the circles properties on the ear)
The new ear is now pink (I hope!)

If you would like to help with translating Inkscape to Norwegian, you are very welcome :) It looks like the translation is still missing many words :(

Regards,
 Maren
