how do I add a signature to a documnet

I want to add an electronic signature to documents. How do I do that?????

Inkscape itself does not offer support for signatures, as far as I know.

I guess you want to sign an SVG file?
If that's the case, you could use GPG for this. If you just need to make sure people can check if the file was changed, you could also just compute a hashsum and tell this to the people getting the document.

There is also some special signature thing for XML documents: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XML_Signature , but I have never seen it actually being used. I don't know if there exist programs which check that signature when opening an XML document.

There are also some special functionalities for signing pdf files, if you prefer that. Some pdf readers offer the option to sign a pdf.
