All fonts are unusable and have a warning triangle on them

Asked by Bruno Boettcher

Hello
my first project on inkscape and running onto a strange problem ....
i want to apply another font to my text i am drawing.... i open the selector, and i see a hughe list of fonts....
all with a sample right next to it, but when i select one, i get a little warning triangle, and on my drawing nothing happens....
i tried to install some other .ttf font generally and locally into my account, same....
the font appears, i see the preview, but i can't use it in my drawing....

i am using debian :
 cat /etc/debian_version
8.0
Inkscape 0.48.5 r10040 (Oct 7 2014)

what can i do?

thanks
Bruno

Make sure that the default font is one that is actually installed on your system:

1) open 'Text and Font' dialog
2) select a font in the list of the installed ones
3) click on the button in the lower left corner of the dialog to make it the default ('Set as default')
4) close dialog

[ Background info: unlike earlier versions, Inkscape 0.48 by default uses the generic font 'Sans' as default for new text - a font which is does not exist as such, and relies that the font backend of the system (fontconfig) will substitute it with a matching one (on modern distros, that's often DejaVu Sans). ]

Now try again to use any of the regular installed fonts for a text object on-canvas:
1) switch to the text tool
2) click once on the canvas with it, and start entering the text
3) once you are done entering the text, change the font family by selecting a different from the dropdown list in the text tool controls bar right above the canvas.

Likely you are affected by this known issue (fixed in latest stable release 0.91):
* Bug #667091 "Fonts initially indicated as 'not found on system'"
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/667091
which can happen if the default font as stored in Inkscaep's preferences is no longer available on the current system (e.g. after an OS upgrade).
