Making circular barcodes

How can I create a circular barcode (like those described at http://www.zanella-hifi.com/szp/bcg_eng.html )? I can generate an EAN-8 barcode with Extensions > Render > Barcodes > Classic... , and I can reduce the barcode to a very short barcode that I can imagine dragging around in a circle, but I can't seem to actually drag it around in a circle. I've tinkered with Clones and not gotten it right.

You could try if Path -> Path Effects -> Bend or Pattern along Path does what you want.
