how to make lines

Asked by jeanne regan

I want to make a series of parallel lines - 5/32" wide, spaced 1/32" apart across an 8:5 x 11" area...HOW? Way first time user here.
I am going to print them out on a transparency to use to create a controlled moire-type illusion of animation by layering over other lines.

Hi Jeanne,

skills you will need for this:

- setting document size -> Shift + Ctrl + D

Option 1: manually:
- making a vertical (or horizontal) line: Shift + F6 (Bezier-Tool), then in the toolbar choose the last offered mode which makes horizontal and vertical lines
- knowing how long a line is: select the line and look at the numbers displayed in the toolbar
- knowing how thick a line is: Shift+Ctrl + F, Stroke pattern tab, set / check the width of the line
- spacing lines evenly: Shift+Ctrl + A for the Align and distribute dialog, align with same distance

Option 2: using grid creation:
- use extensions -> Render -> Grid to make a grid, which will space the lines correctly. Then set the width of the lines as in Option 1, and delete the wrong perpendicular lines, if there are any (and you didn't set their distance so wide that there are none created).

Option 3: using tiled clones:
- make a line of the correct length and width like in Option 1
- use the tiled clones dialog to create correctly spaced clones

There are probably still a lot more options how this can be done, for example by snapping to a grid, and duplicating, and ...

Please look up how to use the tools I mentioned here in the manual at http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/ - describing this in detail is a bit too long to explain here. Still, I hope that these hints will get you started.
