Turn off that unusable sliders inside spin boxes

Asked by Lebostein

How I can turn off that unusable sliders inside some spin boxes? If I click in a spin box to edit the values by typing numbers I change the value because I touch the slider every time. That is frustrating.

That is a catastrophic design failure in my eyes. I see no advantage in this function. It makes typing and marking of numbers to a game of patience. I hope this could be deactivated.

Why you don't use a combination of a slider beside a spin box like the RGBA color values inside the Fill and Stroke dialog? You should strive for a consistent structure of the GUI elements!

There is no option to turn off / switch back to the older style of the slider widgets.

The code for the new sliders originates in GIMP, and was implemented for Inkscape based on this report:
* Bug #1014988 “Port Gimp 2.8 (spinscale) slider widget”
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1014988

It has been discussed controversially several times since then, latest was this thread on the devel mailing list:
  http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.graphics.inkscape.devel/45158

Hm. The only reason why this widget was introduced in GIMP are the use with touch screens. Please read the GIMP discussion. Therefore these widgets in GIMP are very heigh.

But in Inkscape these widgets are too small for a use with a touch screen. What is the reason to introduce this widgets in Inkscape?

There are currently no further answers or explanations I could offer - issues with the new gimpscale sliders are being tracked in a separate bug report (I linked this question to it) and users have protested (in quite drastic language) on the developers mailing list already. The devs team is aware of the current situation, but so far no decision has been made how to proceed. I'm sure the issue will be discussed and further investigated as Inkscape moves closer to the next major release (0.92).

There is no point in adding more comments to the original (now closed) report (bug #1014988).

Issues with the current implementation are tracked in bug #1189846.
The problems with the new sliders are known - the details might slightly vary depending on settings of the specific GTK+ theme used, but affect inkscape on all supported platforms.

Can you help with this problem?
