I want to import my own fabric Jpegs to add to my designs; how do I do this?
Although I have the fabric upgrade, there aren't many fabrics suitable for my designs. I want to import Fabric images (Jpegs) into the library- and then into my design. I got the Jpeg into the library, put it onto my workspace, converted obj. to pattern but it doesn't appear in the fill/stroke options and so cannot be added to the design.
How do I make this happen?

Hi Suzanne,
to be able to help you, we need some more info:
1.) Which Inkscape version are you using?
2.) Which operating system are you on?
3.) Did you follow these steps:
1.) select jpg image
2.) choose 'convert object to pattern'
3.) select some shape or path object
4.) open Fill&stroke dialog
5.) assign a pattern to the object (click on the checkerboard button in the *fill* tab)
6.) click on the dropdown list for patterns, select the first one, which is called something like pattern1234
4.) (Just out of curiosity: What is the 'fabric upgrade'? )
Regards,
Maren

Sorry - I thought an email would arrive with any questions and so missed this!
I followed exactly as you describe however at the point 6. the pattern did not appear in the DropDown List.
The Version is 'Inkscape Windows 7'
I purchased it along with a Digital Fashion Design Program (Fashion Pro) which uses Inkscape; the Fabric upgrade is a library of 1000 fabrics to choose from...none of which really suit my work, hence I need to be able to import my own, suitable ones.
I think this answers everything? I'll leave this dialogue open now so I don't miss your response...
Best Wishes,
Suzanne

Wow - this is weird. They seem to sell Inkscape and some patterns/templates together in a package and on their website never mention that it's (based on) Inkscape...
@suv: Do you have an opinion / further info about this?
@Suzanne: How did you know that the program they ship is actually (based upon) Inkscape? What is the licence they use for the program? What else did you get beside the program?
As this seems not to be an official Inkscape version, I suggest you ask the people who sold the program to you - or, you could test, if the pattern making works with the official Inkscape version from our website: https:/
We cannot be sure that the program you have is somehow different from the official Inkscape version, so if there is a bug in your version, it might be specific to yours - it would be good to rule that out first.

Maren

Quoting from their page at http://
28. How many computers can I install the program on? One program per computer. Additional licenses can be purchased for a nice discount. Just inquire when ordering or send us an email before hand for details.
Sounds like this could be a GPL violation to me - but it's a bundle, so an enquiry for the source code of the program itself might be interesting.

I didn't know up-front; it used to be based within one of the photo-editing programmes (Adobe) I have an inkscape disc, so I'm assuming stye buy them to sell out...i hope that what I'm hearing isn't " you didn't buy it from us so you're on your own"...? I paid £600 for the package and the majority of what it does I could have done myself after buying Inkscape from you - but it isn't really known here in the UK; They're at least doing some profiling for you! That said, you're kinda undoing the good work...

BTW - I'm happy to help you - I am a Brand owner myself and copywriter theft makes me fume; but I need my back scratching too!
FYI; to my mind, I bought Inkscape and have an original disc. I bought Fashion Pro which is loads of Fashion Templates (Vectors), and I bought the training disc to tell me how to use them together....I can use Inkscape without Fashion Pro but not Fashion Pro without Inkscape...the SVG graphics will open in Adobe Illustrator BUT the vectors aren't wholly compatible. Would you like to email me directly and send me a screen Dump of Inkscape and I will compare it to what I have - I would like to know if what I have is wholly compatible!
Don't know if this is worth anything but, I have to use it through Parallels (Im on iMac being a designer) as they"haven't developed to for Mac use yet"; have you? I HATE having to slum it with bloody Windows (spot the PC hater!)
Happy for you to liaise directly; <email address hidden> - please entitle any email 'Inkscape Copywriter issue'...I get hundreds of emails every day and so need to be able to prioritise quickly!

« [...] I hope that what I'm hearing isn't " you didn't buy it from us so you're on your own"...? I paid £600 for the package [...] »
What I understand is this : That "digital fashion pro" thing is a plain scam.
Inkscape is a free software, licensed under the GPL.
Free to download, free to use, free to modify and redistribute under the terms of the GPL ( https:/
They are also free to sell for the amount they want their library of fabrics, etc, as this is not the inkscape software (even if selling it for several hundred dollars would still appear as a scam to me).
However, (as far as i understand the gpl) they are not allowed to use inkscape's source, make minor modifications to it, rebrand it, and sell it with restrictive licenses without sharing the modified source code or even mentionning inkscape.
We, Inkscape's people, do not sell anything. We develop inkscape, we distribute inkscape (for all platforms, even though mac version needs Xquartz for now ), we love inkscape, and we try to help people who use inkscape. We do not make money with it, it's just an activity we do alongside our real job in our free time. We fix bugs that were present in old versions, and the first advice you will hear from us is "Are you using the latest version ?" because (1) what you experience will be based on the version and if the problem is solved in a more recent version, then we "already" fixed your problem; and (2) if those guys have tampered with the code in their non-official version, we don't know in which way (they never contacted us).

Suzanne,
You can download Inkscape for free at:
There are even versions for Macs.
To use a jpg as a pattern you must first import it into Inkscape and then convert it to a pattern. The steps are described in the first post. If they don't work for you, can you give more details about what you have tried?
There is some more information about patterns in the Inkscape guide at:
http://
It would help to know what version of Inkscape you are using. To find out you can go to the "Help Menu" and click on the last entry "About Inkscape".

Thanks everyone for raising the possible legal problem. I will follow up on that with SFC and Suzanne offline.
Meanwhile, let's still try to get her original problem solved. Please refer back to her response #7. Keep in mind that Design Fashion Pro is apparently based on our version 0.48, and could potentially have changes like disabling imports or something. Might be worth having her test using the Design Fashion Pro templates with Inkscape 0.91/Mac.

@Suzanne:
To get your problem solved, you can install the most current Inkscape version from our website. It's free, you do not have to pay for it.
As we cannot be sure how much your Fashion Design Pro depends on the Inkscape version it brings with it, we cannot promise that FashionDesignPro will work just as before. We suspect it will, though. Still, be sure to have the original installation media available, in case the new Inkscape version interferes with the old one.
Please follow the installation instructions on our website, and ask here when any problem occurs or you don't know how to continue. We will give you any support we can, and we are very happy that you want to help us, too :)
Thank you,
kind regards,
Maren
