How do I merge shapes

I have two boxes and I want to merge the two together eliminating the common lines completely. For example, merging a tall narrow box with a wide narrow box and ending with an "L" shape with only the outer border and a shared fill. Is this possible?

Hi Doug,

yes, of course that's possible :)

Select both shapes and press Ctrl + + or use Path -> Unite (or similar, the one above 'Difference')
